Hi everyone!
I hope you all had a fun weekend! Here are some things to look forward to this week:
Tuesday: -strings
-1 o'clock release
Thursday: - Science Expo 6PM-8PM
Friday: -homework due
- School-wide Crazy Hair Day!
Homework:
Math: Students will work on finding the area of irregular shapes and will practice known multiplication facts. To find the area of irregular shapes, students must first break the shape into two rectangles and determine the side lengths of each rectangle. They will then be able to multiply the length x the width of each rectangle and add the products together to find the total area. If your child struggles with this, please send me a note and send it back to school. I would much rather review this topic with your child then have them be frustrated at home!
Word Study: This week, we will practice adding the suffixes -ed and -ing onto 1-1-1 and vowel-consonant-e words. Examples: when adding -ing to a 1-1-1 word like "stir", the final consonant needs to be doubled resulting in "stirring". When adding -ed to a vowel-consonant-e word like "stare", you need to drop the e at the end of the word resulting in "staring".
Reading: Students were assigned book club teams on Friday and have selected the first book they will read together. They will make their first assignment tomorrow. Most of students' book club reading will be done in school, but if not, they will be encouraged to bring their books home. It is very important that they keep up with their group's reading assignments and do not read ahead!
Here's a look into what's been going on in our class:
Math: We've been studying the relationship between area and perimeter, and have been challenged to find the area of irregular polygons. Students have recognized formulas for finding both the area and perimeter of rectangles (P=2L+2W and A=LxW). This week, we will study the properties of other polygons, beginning with triangles.
Reading: We began thinking about how main characters in most fiction stories travel along a story mountain: they encounter a problem that rises until it reaches a climax and then the character works to resolve the problem. In their book clubs, students will collaborate with peers to study new characters in new books to notice patterns in their journey along the story mountain.
Writing: We're working to elaborate on facts in our information writing! Students are really invested in learning about different types of animals and have worked hard to categorize the types of information they are finding. This week, we will continue to practice elaboration strategies and will start to polish up our rough drafts by adding transitions.
Science: While our crayfish settle into their new habitat, we studied magnetism! Students participated in several investigations, with the following focus questions in mind:
This week, we'll start to study the structures of our new crayfish!
I'm looking forward to another great week in third grade!

- What happens when magnets interact with other magnets and paper clips?
- How is the magnetic field affected when one or more magnets are added?
