Hi everyone,
I hope you've all recovered from last night's loss :(
We're back in the swing of things this week! Here's what you can expect:
Tuesday: - strings practice
-1 o'clock release
Friday: -homework due
Upcoming:
Thursday, January 30th: Student Science Expo!
Homework:
Math: Students will receive a double-sided practice page reviewing subtraction strategies and telling time.
Word Study: We will be picking up the pace with Word Study this week, kicking off the new year by studying r-controlled syllables (ir, er, ur). Students will complete a sort at home with this pattern. On Friday, students will quiz each other-- please try your best to help your child practice these words at home!
Reading: We are back into a fiction unit, so students should try their best to be reading 30 mins per night. I will be sending fresh reading logs home with students so they can continue logging their daily reading.
Student Science Expo: Check out this flyer for more information about the Student Science Expo:
Here's a look into some of our new units starting this week:
Math: Tomorrow marks the start of our 4th math unit: Perimeter, Area, and Polygons. This week, students will practice using different measurement tools to measure the perimeter of different surfaces in our classroom, both regular and irregular shapes. They will also solve many types of perimeter problems. To learn more about the strategies and language that will be used in this unit, check out these Math Words and Ideas videos: Perimeter & Solving Perimeter Problems.
Reading: We're jumping back into a fiction unit this week: Character Studies! This unit will help students to strengthen their analyzing and summarizing skills. To help us do this work, we will be reading Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo as a mentor text. We'll start by looking closely at how the main character's actions and words lead to later events in the story. Students will apply reading strategies we practice when reading this text to their own independent reading. Please help to make sure your child is reading at least 30 mins every day and recording on their new reading logs going home tomorrow!
Writing: Before break, students chose an animal they were interested in researching further, and began recording some facts about their diet, life cycle, habitat, appearance, and body parts. This week, we will work to set up different organization structures within the chapters of their book and will work on elaborating on different topics and ideas. The more resources students have to research about their animal, the better! If you're able to make a trip to the library in the next week or so to check out a book with information on their selected animal, that would be great!
Word Study: After plenty of review of suffixes and 1-1-1 words, we will shift our focus to r-controlled vowels-- words that contain ir,er, and ur. We will be implementing some new Word Study routines this week that follow this typical schedule:
Monday: introduce new pattern and give time to practice with a cut and sort
Wednesday: students work on written sort with pattern words and review of old patterns in small groups
Friday: buddy quiz
To help with the success of these new routines, practice with these words at home is crucial. Every week, students will bring home a copy of a written sort with that week's pattern words. If you notice your child struggling to spell any of these words, you can encourage extra practice by giving more opportunities to spell them using this Spelling Tic-Tac-Toe grid available on our Important Information and Extra Practice page. The more exposure students can get with using these patterns, the more likely they will be to transfer correct spellings into their own writing.
Science: We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our new class pet Crayfish! While we wait, we're going to learn about life cycles of various organisms!
That's all for now! Have a great week!
Ms. McLellan
