Hi Everyone!
Hope you're making the most of this rainy day! Happy Diwali to those who celebrate :)
Here are some things to look forward to this week:
Tuesday: -strings practice
-1 o'clock release
Thursday: -homework due
-Halloween!
Friday: No School- Professional Day
Homework:
Math: Students will bring home a double-sided practice page reviewing data collection and subtraction strategies. This homework will be due on Thursday, since there is no school on Friday for kids!
Word Study: Due to the short week and upcoming holiday, we will pause Word Study and continue next week!
Reading: Students should continue reading for 30 mins per night. We are working on non-fiction reading strategies in school. It is up to students whether or not they will read non-fiction at home as well, or continue reading their fiction books.
Halloween Costumes: Students may wear their costumes to school on Thursday. Please be aware that masks, face paint that covers the face, or gory/bloody costumes are not allowed. Please reach out if you have any questions!
Here's what we were working on last week:
Math: We continued working on ways to represent different types of data. This week, students will get more practice creating bar graphs, line plots, and pictographs. We will also be traveling to different classrooms around the school to collect some data from students of different ages.
Reading: We started learning about the strategies needed to effectively read non-fiction texts! We practiced summarizing sections of the text using the boxes and bullets strategy. To use this strategy, you draw a rectangle at the top of your page with 3-4 bullets below it. In the box, you write the main idea of the section you read, and the bullets are for supporting details that further explain the main idea. We will continue working on finding the main idea of texts this week.
Writing: Everyone picked a new seed story idea for our personal narrative unit. Students will continue drafting their stories this week and will begin revising them in a few days. When revising, students will look to mentor texts and third grade writing rubrics to improve their own writing.
Science: We set up an experiment to investigate if a seed can soak up water. It turns out that they can! We worked to label the parts of a seed, and this week, we'll begin exploring different types of seeds and how they work!
That's all for now! Have a great week!
Ms. McLellan
