Hi everyone,
I can't believe the beautiful weather we've been having! I hope you were all able to enjoy it! :)
Here are some things to look forward to this week:
Tuesday: -strings practice
-early release
Friday: -homework due
Upcoming: Monday, January 20th-- No School!
Homework:
Math: Students will work on some perimeter practice at home this week. On one side of their practice page, they will be given a specific perimeter, and they will need to draw and shape with labeled side lengths that amount to the given perimeter. They will also be measuring objects around home to find the perimeter of. I suggest students stick to flat, rectangular surfaces! Students will need a ruler or measuring tape for this activity-- let me know if you need me to send one home! I
If you are interested in learning more about the perimeter work we've been doing, visit the "Extra Practice" page and watch one of the "Math Words and Ideas" videos on that topic!
Word Study: Students will bring home a word sort practicing the sounds /er/ at the end of words. Students will notice the spellings of and sort words like "dollar", "panther", and "motor".
Reading: Please help to make sure your child is reading at least 30 mins per night and filling out their reading logs!
Student Science Expo: Please view this flyer for more info on the upcoming Student Science Expo!
Here's what's going on in our classroom:
Math: We began an investigation on measurement and perimeter! Students practiced using rulers, yard sticks, meter sticks, and other measurement benchmarks to measure the perimeter of rectangular shapes in our classroom. This week, we will practice finding the perimeter of irregular shapes before moving on to an investigation of area.
Reading: We kicked off our Character Studies unit by reading the hilarious first chapters of Because of WInn Dixie. We got to know a new main character, Opal, by studying what she does and says. This week, we will work to create deeper theories about the main characters in our books based off of their actions and dialogue. Later this week, I will link a "jot form" on the extra practice page of our website with some thinking points that students can consider when reading their own books.
Writing: This week, we will be working to elaborate in our informational writing pieces. Students will push themselves to "say more" about each fact they give and will study mentor information texts to try out some different writing moves.
Science: While we wait for our new crayfish friends to arrive, we will be doing an investigation on magnets and how they interact with each other. Students will especially be focusing on terms such as: force, balanced forces, unbalanced forces, push, pull, and gravity.
That's all for now!
Ms. McLellan
