Hi Everyone,
We're finally back to a full week of school!
Here's what you can look forward to this week:
Tuesday: -1 o'clock release
Wednesday: -In-school Book Fair shopping time
Book Fair: The Book Fair will be taking place in the library all week after school until 3:30, except Thursday when it will be open longer hours to accommodate after-school pick-ups. Our class will have time to shop during their library time at 8:30 on Wednesday. You can send them with money so they can purchase books then.
Homework:
Math: Students will work on a double-sided math practice page. One side will ask students to organize some given data on an extra sheet of paper and record some information about the data. Students should not cut out pieces of data from this sheet-- they should write the data pieces on an extra sheet of paper. The second side of homework will be addition review.
Word Study: Students will continue practicing adding on suffixes to 1-1-1 words.
Reading: Students should continue reading for 30 mins per night, but I will no longer be expecting them to complete their reading logs each night. If they enjoy this routine, they are welcome to continue with it.
STEM: This Friday, we will be working on a special STEM activity! To help make this possible, students will each need a shoe box lid (size is not important). If you have any extra shoe box lids at home, try to send them in sometime this week so we can put them to great use!
Here's what we've been doing in class:
Math: On Friday, we started working on our data unit! We collected data about the places where we like to eat, thought of questions we'd like to answer with the data, and organized the data to give useful information. We will continue this work this week!
Reading: Last week, we celebrated the completion of the Building a Reading Life unit by creating some "Fall Reading Wreaths" inspired by the books we've loved reading this year. Tomorrow will be the start of our next reading unit: Reading to Learn. We will begin by exploring non-fiction text features and how they can help us comprehend the text.
Writing: Students moved into the drafting stage of the writing process by selecting a seed idea to develop into a story. We've been working hard to take big story ideas and narrowing them into small moments that they can write every detail about. We thought about the saying "Write about a pebble, not about the beach", and students seem to be doing a great job of narrowing their focus!
Science: Last week, we began thinking about how seeds are alike and different. We explored many different fruits and vegetables for their seeds and examined their properties. This week, we will learn more about types of seeds, the parts of a seed, and how seeds work in different environments.
That's all for now! Have a great week!
Marissa
