Hi Everyone!
I hope you've had a wonderful long weekend so far! Here are some things to look forward to this week:
Monday: -No School, Columbus Day
Tuesday: -strings practice
-early release, 1 o'clock
Thursday: -Seed Investigation donations due
Friday: -homework due
Homework:
Math: Students will receive a double-sided practice page which will review solving multiplication and division story problems. We completed this unit on Friday, so if you notice your child struggling to work on these pages, please let me know!
Word Study: Students will continue considering 1-1-1 words this week (words with 1 syllable, 1 vowel, and 1 consonant after the vowel). This week, we will be exploring how to add on suffixes to different types of base words. When adding a suffix to a 1-1-1 word, the final consonant needs to be doubled.
ex: hop--> hopping
non example: bring--> bringing
Reading: This is the last week I will require students to fill out a reading log for homework. We will be transitioning to our nonfiction reading unit at the end of the week, so our focus will no longer be on tracking reading habits.I will collect all reading logs on Friday so I can get a better sense of reading interests and how I can best support your child's reading life in school!
Seed Investigation Donations: If you are interested in donating some fruit or veggies to us to help enhance our seed exploration day on Thursday, please sign up on our Sign-Up Genius page here:

Here's what went on in class last week!
Math: We wrapped up our multiplication and division unit! Students got to play a lot of math games to review their facts, such as Missing Factors! You can access all of the games we've played in class on the "Important Information and Extra Practice" page here! At this point in the year, students are expected to have the x1, x2, x5, and x10 facts memorized. We will be returning to multiplication and division later in the year and knowing these facts will be extremely helpful for students!
Reading: Students practiced asking big questions, like questioning the author's purpose. We thought about what big questions we would ask the author of Stone Fox, John Reynolds Gardiner if he were in our classroom. We also talked about the stereotypes that were in the story and how some groups of people are portrayed negatively. Big discussions like these will continue throughout the school year!
Writing: We've been using strong mentor texts like "Come On, Rain", "Fireflies", and even some writing from our very own classmates to help us notice what great narrative writers do. Students have been working to stretch out small moment stories by adding tons of tiny details, dialogue, and using their five senses. The stories coming to life in our classroom are unbelievable!
Social Studies: We finished learning about Massachusetts and maps last week by competing in an intense game of Jeopardy! Students will take a quick mapping assessment this week and we will move onto our first science unit of the year: Structures of Life!
That's all for now!
