Happy March, Everyone!
I'm looking forward to warmer weather and some outdoor recess this week! Please remind your child to dress in layers this week so they can be comfortable outside! Here's what you can look forward to this week:
Tuesday: -strings practice
-1 o'clock release
Friday: -homework due
- Writer's Celebration
-Rescheduled Wacky Sweater Day!
Upcoming:
Sunday, March 8: Daylight Savings-- Spring Forward!
Homework:
Math: Students will work on a double-sided practice page reviewing related story problems. Check out the Important Information and Extra Practice page for some videos on how students can solve related multiplication problems and for some tutorials on the different types of skills we've been working on this year. Don't forget to keep practicing facts!
Word Study: This week, we will practice spelling words with different spellings of the long e sound (ex: ceiling, piece, jeep, cheap).
Here's some of what's been going on in our classroom lately:
Math: We are well into our second unit on multiplication and division! After working with cube trains and noticing recurring patterns in them, we've shifted our focus to solving multiplication and division story problems. Students are practicing using facts they know to help them solve harder facts.
Here's an example:
7x7 may be a tricky fact, but 7x5 is a little easier to figure out. If you know that 7x5 is 35, you just have to add on two more groups of 7 (14) to 35 to find the product of 7x7!
Be sure to check out the Important Information and Extra Practice page for some Math Words and Ideas videos to become familiar with the skills, strategies, and language being used throughout this year.
Reading: We are wrapping up our Character Studies unit this week. Students have worked hard to analyze character traits, story elements, and to compare similar characters from different texts. They have worked on having strong conversations about their books with their book clubs and have really shown an improvement with their stop and jots! Next, we will focus on poetry!
Writing: Students are putting the finishing touches on their information writing pieces! We can't wait to teach you all about some interesting animals during our writer's celebration this Friday at 8:30 am! We hope to see you there!
Science: We've been studying the life cycle of a crayfish as well as learning about different types of adaptations. This week, we will do several activities to put what we've learned about life cycles and adaptations to the test!
All February long, we celebrated Black History Month by reading texts about influential African Americans, and last week, we learned a little bit about the Civil Rights Movement and even got to listen to a visiting speaker share about his own experiences during that time.
March is Women's History Month, and I'm already gathering some great texts to share with the class! I'll post some of the titles to our class Instagram page this week!
That's all for now, have a great night!
Ms. McLellan
