Happy Super Bowl Sunday!
It feels a lot whole different not having the Pats in the game this year! Here's what you can look forward to this week:
Tuesday: -strings
-early release-- 1 o'clock
Friday: -homework due
Saturday: -Pancake Breakfast-- 8-10 AM!
Homework:
Math: Students will play an area and perimeter practice game! They will use a spinner to get 2 side lengths for a rectangle. Using these side lengths, they will then find the area and perimeter of that rectangle. I am encouraging students to play at least 2 times this week, or until they fill their grid paper with rectangles!
Word Study: Students will sort words with the letters "ea" in them, and will consider the three sounds "ea" can make in words. Some examples of the sounds include the use of "ea" in words like bread, steak, and meat.
Reading: Students should continue reading independently at home. If students do not complete reading their book club assignment in school, they should finish that for homework and can count it towards their 30 mins of independent reading.
Here's a glimpse into what's been going on in our class:
Math: We're finishing up our unit on Measurement, Area, and Perimeter. In this unit, students learned how to find the area and perimeter of rectangles and irregular shapes. They also explored the attributes of shapes like triangles, squares, rectangles, and rhombuses. We will move into our second unit on Multiplication and Division starting on Tuesday. By the end of this unit, students should be fluent with most of their facts through x10. If you're looking to practice at home, visit the "Extra Practice" page for the links to some of the multiplication games we play in class!
Reading: We've been exploring what it takes to have strong and comfortable book club conversations. With their clubs, students set norms and daily assignments to hold themselves accountable to stay on task. There have been some great new thoughts and ideas stemming from the conversations being held and I'm excited to see this continue this week!
Writing: We've been working to say more about each detail and fact in our animal information writing pieces. We studied mentor texts to see how expository writers can help their readers make a mind move and feel certain emotions. We also practiced connecting all of the information in our pieces with transition words and began studying how to write a strong lead. This week, I expect many students to begin typing their published pieces! Stay tuned for the date of our next writer's celebration!
Science: It's so much fun having crayfish in our class! Students got a visit from a 4th grader who taught them how to properly handle and care for the crayfish while we have them. Students have since been learning about crayfish structures and also how to set up a healthy habitat for them! This week, we'll study their behaviors!
That's all for now, have a great night!
