Hi everyone!
I hope you're staying warm on this chilly weekend! Here are some things to look forward to this week:
Monday: -Writer's Celebration-- 8:25-9:00 in our classroom!
Tuesday: -strings
-11:15 AM release-- conferences!
Thursday: -PM parent-teacher conferences!
Friday: -homework due
-Science Day!
Homework:
Math: Students will take home a double sided practice page where they will practice rounding to the nearest 10 and nearest 100, as well as work on some addition review.
Word Study: Students will take home a practice page reviewing adding the suffix -ed on the end of base words.
Holiday Book Swap: Check out this PDF for some info on our class' Holiday Book Swap! Reach out if you have any questions!
Holiday Traditions: We love learning about the many holidays and traditions the students in class celebrate. If you or another family member would like to come to our class to share about a holiday or tradition your family celebrates, we would love to have you! Let me know if you're interested so we can find a time!
Here's what has been going on in our class:
Math: We have been practicing using various strategies to solve addition problems. Some of the most popular strategies are adding by place and adding one number in parts. Follow those links for some videos on what these strategies look like! A big focus in third grade is building the foundational knowledge of the role of place value when adding numbers. We ask that you try to refrain from teaching students the "standard algorithm" at home as it tends to lead to some confusion when learning "how" addition works.
Reading: Students took the final assessment for our Reading to Learn unit on Friday. This week, students will self-assess their work and reflect on how they can continue to work toward meeting their reading goals. We will take a pause from beginning our next unit to catch up on our class read aloud: The Wild Robot!
Writing: Students are excited to show off their personal narratives tomorrow! Later this week, we're going to begin our next writing unit focused on information writing! Students will begin researching animals and we'll work together to analyze how to build organized information stories.
Social Studies: Painting friezes on Friday was a blast! Tomorrow we will continue adding information and finishing touches to them. We can't wait for you to see them during your conference time!
Have a wonderful week!
Ms. McLellan
