Our year together is off to a great start! We spent this past week getting to know each other, setting expectations, doing fun activities, and starting some of our first units. Here are some highlights of our week together:
Students will be spending a lot of time working with partners and in groups this year, so we had a lot of opportunities this week to practice our teamwork skills. Students worked together to complete a scavenger hunt in our classroom, had discussions to find things they have in common, and even built pyramids out of cups only using a rubber band and some string! I can't wait to see what our team will accomplish together in the future!
We read so many great books together that have been helping to set expectations and to inspire our class. Here are some of the titles:
*All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold
*First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg
*Maybe Something Beautiful by Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell
*Mae Among the Stars by Roda Ahmed
*Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Book by Lauren Child
We started off our first reading unit, Building a Reading Life, by discussing how to take care of our books.
We're slowly beginning our first math unit on multiplication. To introduce students to this concept, we worked in teams to generate lists of things that come in groups. Some of their lists included: twins, watermelons on a vine, donuts, the 3 little pigs, and even grades at Dallin. We will continue thinking about things that come in groups as we begin writing and solving multiplication word problems.
Our first social studies unit is all about reading maps, becoming familiar with Arlington landmarks, and learning about notable places in Massachusetts. Students spent time exploring all different types and sizes of maps this past week. They began noticing different map features such as keys/legends, scales, compasses, and titles. We will continue this exploration for the next few weeks.
- We will continue our reading, math, and social studies work, and will be adding in our new writing unit! This first unit is all about writing personal narratives!
- I will begin taking attendance right at 8:20 am every day. Please do your best to have your child in school by the bell at 8:10!
- We will have our first community celebration on Friday!
I will be working on adding some pictures of our first week together!. Please reach out with any questions or concerns!
That's all for now,
